I used to think crypto was too complex. That's why I built CryptoGran Academy

When I first heard about Bitcoin, my eyes glazed over. Blockchain, mining, private keys—it all sounded like a bad sci-fi movie. I thought, “Nope, that’s too technical for me.” But as time went on, I realised I was missing out on something that could genuinely transform my financial future. The real kicker?

It wasn’t that crypto was impossible to understand. It was the way it was being explained—often by twenty-year-old “gurus” on YouTube who assumed everyone watching was as tech-savvy as they were.

I’ve always believed that if something feels too daunting, it’s usually because the explanations aren’t meeting you where you are. Let’s face it, those of us born in the 1950's to 1970's have different priorities, concerns, and time constraints than a college student tinkering in their dorm. We want clarity, practicality, and real-world examples, not endless jargon.

That’s why I launched CryptoGran Academy—a place where women 50+ could learn the basics without feeling judged or out of place. No “bro culture,” no complicated charts without explanation, and definitely no assumption that you already know all the buzzwords.

Here’s the biggest lesson I learned:
fear usually comes from not knowing enough. According to a study by eToro, a whopping 60% of women surveyed said they’d be more comfortable investing if there was clearer education tailored to their needs. That stat hit home for me. It’s not that women don’t want to invest or aren’t capable—it’s that many existing resources don’t speak our language.

Through CryptoGran Academy, I break everything down into understandable chunks. For example, when we talk about what a “wallet” is, we use analogies like your real-life handbag: you protect it, you keep valuable items in it, and you need to know how to take care of it. We also pace it out in bite-sized lessons so you’re never overwhelmed. One of my early students, a retired teacher named Linda, said the approach reminded her of teaching a new subject to curious kids—start with the basics, make it relatable, then build up from there.

A Simple Roadmap for Learning Crypto

  1. Trustworthy Education First: Look for books, articles, or courses that explain crypto in plain English. Make sure they have a proven track record and good reviews from people in your age group.

  2. Ignore the Hype: Crypto can feel like the Wild West. You don’t need to chase every new coin or NFT trend. Focus on understanding the fundamental players like Bitcoin and Ethereum before branching out.

  3. Dip Your Toe In: After doing a bit of reading, try buying a small amount of crypto—just enough to experience how transactions work. This “learning by doing” approach often helps it all click.

  4. Community Support: Don’t underestimate the power of a supportive group. Hearing real stories from peers who’ve gone through the same learning curve can keep you motivated and confident.

Once you’ve taken these steps, you’ll find that the seemingly impossible suddenly becomes doable. And honestly, that’s the magic: realising that you’re far more capable than you gave yourself credit for.
